Principles of Design

The topic of the principles of design is one of the most important topics you can start with your career as a designer. With These principles, you manage to create a professional design.

You will find some articles say that it's 5 principles, other articles say that it's 10 principles, others say that it's 7. Whatever how many principles, you have to read more about them.

In this article, I will share all principles of design in order to make it clear for you to create your first design.

Elements and Principles of Design

  • Emphasis

That is the first rule to create an effective design. The emphasis rule is the way to highlight the core message of the design. you need to ask yourself about the main message and the main element in the design then make all design elements serve it. If the text in your design is the most essential message, put it at the center or choose another way to highlight it.

This is the only way to deliver your message so be careful.

  • The Balance of elements

The second rule to create a professional and effective design is to imagine that every element (image-text-colors-shapes..etc), have a weight and your mission is to create a balance between them in order to avoid creating a noisy design.

  • White spaces

One of the biggest mistakes is to forget the importance of white spaces which make your design clear, simple, and readable. White spaces between elements or around the design help you to create an integrated design. so don't forget white spaces with your design, as its effect is like magic in creating simplicity.

  • Contrast

With the Contrast rule, you will use differences between elements to create an attractive design. In this rule, you need to use strong elements to create such a powerful design. Just be sure that the elements work together.

  • Movements rule

One of the principles of design is to choose elements that create movements, such as curvy lines. It's about the way you control all elements to make audiences feel that your design communicates with them. Just be sure that all elements work harmoniously to create a movement design.

  • Proportion

Proportion rule means the sizes of all elements and how they work together. Proportion is a result of taking care of spaces and contrast. It helps your design to be well-sized.

  • Repetition

Do you imagine that repetition is one of the design principles? It's a strong point for your design. You can use repetition for printed materials like t-shirts for example. Or you can use it for your company's logo and your brand identity.

  • Variety

One of the rules you can follow is the Variety rule. It helps you to create an interesting design that catches eyes. You can create variety by using more than one color or you can do it by images or shapes in your design. you can also gain variety as a result of typography. My tip is to be sure that variety is a strong point for your design.

  • Creating unity

The last rule of design principles is to create unity. You must take care of the elements you chose and see if they work together harmoniously. That's how you can create unity. It's about seeing the design and understanding the message immediately. When you look at the design and feel that it communicates with you.

Finally, you can know all principles but choose to follow some of them, it's up to you. You don't need to follow all of these rules, but you must create an effective design and you will not be able to do that if you ignore the basics of design work. So spaces are important, balance is more than an important element and Emphasis is the core of your job. Just be careful with the message you want to deliver, watch a lot of designs to be able to know which is good and which is bad.

Conclusion

The principles of design are very important to read to manage in creating your design. your good, effective design
