Night Photography Techniques to Capture Detailed Scenes
Shutter Speed
Usually, day shots would be having shutter speeds that would be having small fractions. In night photography, the shutter speed has to be long to be more than one second. When it would be dark, then the camera has to be having a longer time in order that it would be absorbing the light and thus, it would be providing the right exposure. However, keep the camera steady and the shutter open for long in order to be steady and to avoid the blurry photo.
Aperture
Aperture refers to the opening of the lens and that would be letting light in the camera. According to the size, then the amount of light would be inside the camera and it is impacted by the shutter speed as well as the size would be impacting the depth of the field. Usually the aperture in the morning is the same at night. However, the main difference is the time that takes the camera to obtain light at night compared to the day. Moreover, the small aperture would need a longer shutter speed.
ISO
ISO refers to the measurement of the sensitivity to light and it is of the digital sensor. The more the ISO then the more the digital sensor would be sensitive to light and thus, it would be providing you with using shutter speed at a shorter time and aperture would be smaller. However, the use of ISO would be leading to more digital noise that would affect the pictures as the dark areas would be showing in the pictures and they would lead to the showing of noise than it is showing in the light areas. This is one of the main issues that would face night photography. Moreover, try to resist the use of ISO in order to avoid this noise. You can use a tripod that would be avoiding noise and the use of ISO. ISO will lead to longer shutter speed and it will get more light exposure and thus, you will not need to use ISO.
A Starting Point for Proper Exposure
First point is to set the aperture and the ISO as most cameras would be having the shutter speed at night but not in the aperture or the ISO. The aperture setting would have to be on f/5.6, which is a good choice that would lead to a good amount of light. However, it will not provide the right depth of the field and thus, you will need to have an extremely deep depth of the field especially that the background is having no light and it is black.
The second starting point is in the setting of the ISO as it has to be on 400 and this number would be high and thus, you will not need to use the long shutter speed. Setting the ISO 400 will be having no digital noise.
Exposing the Night Sky Photo
Usually the exposure setting would be the same and the setting would be using shutter speed with 15 seconds and the aperture would be f/2.8. The ISO would be set on 6400. In case the lens of your camera's maximum aperture is f/3.5 then the case that you will have to find another light of 2/3. You have two choices; you can add to the ISO or add to the shutter speed, or you can increase through one click that would cause your dials to be 1/3 of the stop.
Subject for Night Photography
Clear sky is one of the best views as it will definitely let you have a great photo. Even if there was no moon, the clear nights would always make great shots. You can be lucky and even catch the Milky Way that would happen from March till October. Other ideas for night photography would be in public buildings as well as historic places. Fountains would be a good place. Bridges would be a very interesting place for night shooting. Streetlights are always.
